چکیده

The morphology of the ǫ Eridani dust ring is reproduced by a numerical simulation of dust particles captured into the 5:3 and 3:2 exterior mean-motion resonances with a 0.3 eccentricity 10 solar mass planet at periastron at a semi-major axis of 40 AU. The morphology will differ when the planet is at aphelion, in about 140 years. Moderate eccentricity planets in outer extra-solar systems will cause observable variations in the morphology of associated dusty rings.

The Dynamical Influence of a Planet at Semimajor Axis 3.4 AU on the Dust Around ǫ Eridani

Precise-Doppler experiments suggest that a massive (m sin i = 0.86MJ) planet orbits at semimajor axis a = 3.4 AU around ǫ Eridani, a nearby star with a massive debris disk. The dynamical perturbations from such a planet would mold the distribution of dust around this star. We numerically integrated the orbits of dust grains in this system to predict the central dust cloud structure. For a suppl...

Overstable Librations can account for the Paucity of Mean Motion Resonances among Exoplanet Pairs

We assess the multi-planet systems discovered by the Kepler satellite in terms of current ideas about orbital migration and eccentricity damping due to planetdisk interactions. Our primary focus is on first-order mean motion resonances, which we investigate analytically to lowest order in eccentricity. Only a few percent of planet pairs are in close proximity to a resonance. However, predicted ...

Chaotic zone boundary for low free eccentricity particles near an eccentric planet

We consider particles with low free or proper eccentricity that are orbiting near planets on eccentric orbits. Via collisionless particle integration we numerically find the location of the boundary of the chaotic zone in the planet’s corotation region. We find that the distance in semi-major axis between the planet and boundary depends on the planet mass to the 2/7 power and is independent of ...

Eccentricity Evolution for Planets in Gaseous Disks

At least several percent of solar type stars possess giant planets. Surprisingly, most move on orbits of substantial eccentricity. We investigate the hypothesis that interactions between a giant planet and the disk from which it forms promote eccentricity growth. These interactions are concentrated at discrete Lindblad and corotation resonances. Interactions at principal Lindblad resonances cau...
